Released as the LG Optimus 3-D overseas, the LG Thrill 4G offers a 4.3 inch LCD parallax barrier display with 800 x 480 pixel resolution and capacitive touchscreen interface. A proximity sensor and a light sensor join the 3-D hardware graphics accelerator to round out the display software.
The Evo 3-D 4G mobile handset was the first mobile smartphone to offer the ability to view 3-D content without the need for special glasses or other hardware.
Matching the HTC 3-D Evo 4G handset in screen size while offering a lower retail price, LG and AT&T hope to steal market share from the Sprint HTC 3-D Evo phone.
Upon initial boot up the phone is snappy, responsive, and feels good in your hand. The dual core processor and dual channel ram give it an extra speed boost which is greatly enjoyed while downloading content, but rarely noticed during normal phone operation.
The processor for the 3-D glasses free LG Thrill is a Texas instrument OMAP chip of 1 GHz and dual cores, supported by 512 MB of RAM. And the exact way that the LG Thrill delivers 3-D recording capability differs little from the HTC 3D technology. The LG Thrill has dual five megapixel cameras facing out from the rear of the handset.
The stereoscopic 3-D imaging software required employs a 3-D hardware graphics accelerator and aforementioned dual five megapixel cameras.
Aside from that and Androids usual battery abuse I have thoroughly enjoyed the phone over the past 7 days.
The phone has a few things stock that I truly love, and a couple items that I find frustrating.
I also fell instantly in love with the WP7 style lock screen notifications.
My love aside I discovered some updating issues with the lock screen notifications for those of us using a custom SMS app. The first thing I do with every Android phone is install Handcent SMS (my favorite SMS app).
LG’s notification system doesn’t take it’s cue from Handcent, it takes it directly from the stock messaging app, so even though they are being marked as read by Handcent and show up read inside the stock app, the lock screen still shows I have a grundle of text messages waiting until I open the messaging app itself.
The only frustration I have found with the phone itself is the intermittent delay on unlocking. I would say that 85% of the time there is absolutely no delay, but the other 15% of the time there is a noticeable 1-2 second delay on lighting the screen when I press the unlock key.
The LG Thrill 4G also features a microSD slot for storage upgradability and microUSB port for multimedia and connectivity options. A microUSB port offers multiple device interfacing and connectivity options, and a microSD slot allows for future storage upgrades. The LG Thrill 4G handset is also Bluetooth and Wi-Fi accessible, and offers video out relay to a large screen HDTV or monitor via the HDMI out port.
The big selling portion of the Thrill is a big 3D screen!
The 3D games on the phone run flawlessly and add an element of fun to the device that other phones simply won’t provide.
Adobe Flash player support is another characteristic of the Android operating system, and is present here with the LG Thrill as well. The familiar rectangular black slab form is employed by LG, and the Android operating system gives full support of Adobe’s Flash media player.
